Bought another used fish aquarium off Craigslist. This is a 55 gal wood grain color. I hate the color and will be painting everything. Cleaning an old tank that has been in storage is not fun but.. a person can save a lot of money buying them like this. People get sick of having these fish tanks sitting in their storage or garage and really sell for cheap. I picked up this whole setup for $80. I'm cleaning the tank with vinegar and a Razorblade. A Razorblade really helps to rid the glass of sediments built up on it. Works amazing and cleans up well. Watch for more updates on this tank setup.
I love it! I have it in my guppy/platy tank, and when the surface gets full, I feed it to my koi and goldfish. It helps filter out nitrates and phosphates - to the point where you may not need as many water changes. And it's a great money maker if you want to sell it. I like it. It helps with the parameters of the water. it helps with skittish fish. It adds green to the tank. Some fish snack on it. Shrimp crawl on it. I have always been able to remove it if I wanted it gone. It floats so it’s easy to scoop it up with a net.
We had it years ago and hated it but I'm trying to plant a tank with silver dollars and if you're two seconds late with breakfast they start taking random bites out of everything. We just got some again so maybe they'll eat it instead of ruining every leaf on plants they don't even seem to like.
If I had a chance again, to not put it into my tanks, I would take it. I have two tanks and a pond. tank 1 - it goes like wildfire (heated & bubbler), tank 2 - is outside, is warm in summer, goes, however guppies love eating the roots and snails like to eat the leaves, so goes down. Pond - the goldfish, snails eat it and guppies trim the roots. Tank 1 - I scoop it out every few weeks and pass it on to the other tanks. It grows crazy!
Been doing fish for a long time, but this the first time I have green water and a issue with ph dropping to 6. Tap water is 7.5. So when I top off or water change it gets very milky I rotate water change and filter cleaning every other week. Ammonia and nitrite 0. Nitrate 20. I have a few 100+gal tanks but this my only bare bottom and only tank having a issue. Was considering a thin layer of coral sand to help buffer. The tank I had a finnex led on a timer 8hrs a day. Any ideas?
No. Ambient light from garage window is all. I’m baffled. No ferts used. Have some Anubis and java fern. Been tinkering with it a few weeks. Finally set aside pride to ask. Check nitrate from tap ! Pretty common to get elevated levels after thaw or changes in aquifer, try filter floss to strain out algae spores. I’ll check when I get home. The green water doesn’t bother me. But swinging Ph does. Get worried if I change too much water the Goldie’s will get shocked.
I agree it seems to be bottoming out fast , when public supply’s get flooded or drought they add lots of stuff to get the water back to acceptable levels , it could be something they are adding although I have no clue why your other tanks wouldn’t read the same , do you have crushed coral in other tanks ?
Clear your aquarium. Good luck man , keep us posted if you nail it , test your tap first run all checks see what’s coming out , it’s good practice to check twice a season to see what’s changing sometimes nitrates are astronomical because they are not considered harmful so you’ll be shocked to see what some people are drinking. Not sure. I know though you'll need to do small water changes everyday. Others say a UV filter, or cover the tank entirely for about three days. But that's a drag. But do perform frequent changes.
